Website promotion is one of the most sought after things in up-and-coming websites and online businesses. It is something that many people can promise overnight for a "small fee". True website promotion is not that easy but requires hard work and dedication. If you have dedication, then you can promote your site just as well for free as you could by spending hundreds on marketing. I have compiled a step-by-step guide of website promotion strategies I have found most useful in my seven years of creating websites. Remember, even if you follow all these steps you must still update your site content regularly.Step 1: Create meta tags for your site. Meta tags are used by search engines to determine your sites relevance to a users search thus making them very important. These tags are placed in between the header tags and should be placed on every page of the site to gain maximum exposure to the search engines. If you do not know how to make meta tags, I have found a free online tool that you simply fill in and it will create the coding for you here: http://www.htmlbasix.com/meta.shtml (it may take a moment to load.) Meta tags must be relevant to your site or else they will not help at all. To determine how effective your meta tags are, after creating them you can run them through the free analysis tool found here: http://www.widexl.com/remote/search-engines/metatag-analyzer.html and tweak them until you receive good results.Step 2: Submit your site to search engines. Most search engines will pick up your site eventually assuming you update regularly, but I have found it helpful that you submit your site the day it becomes complete (it usually takes a few weeks for the submission to kick in). Again, I have found a free tool that will submit your site for you to twenty of the most popular search engines here: http://freewebsubmission.com/. Only submit your site one time with this site, but it should be the only time you will ever need to submit it. Remember, do this after you make your meta tags.Step 3: Build your Alexa rank. Many people do not believe that Alexa rank has any value at all because it can be so easily manipulated and maybe it doesn't. But if you do think it holds value and want to build it, you can easily do this. First you need to download theAlexa toolbar here: http://www.alexa.com/site/download/. This only works with internet explorer so you will need that as well. Once you have the Alexa toolbar installed and working, you must visit your site once a day with internet explorer. Your ranking will eventually get better as the days progress.Step 4: Browse the internet to find suitable site affiliates. A site affiliate is another site that is relevant to your sites main topic and agrees to place your link on their site in exchange for you placing their link on your site. Affiliates can be a very powerful tool in increasing traffic and page rank (more on that in step 5). I would recommend no more than 10 site affiliates but no less than 2.Step 5: Submit your site to directories. This is perhaps one of the most important step because it serves several functions. First, it can drive more traffic to your site by getting your sites link and name out there and second, it will help to increase your google page rank. Google page rank is important and you can read about it here: http://www.webworkshop.net/pagerank.html. Normally, submitting your site to directories would be a pain because it is hard to find good ones to submit to that are free. Luckily, I have found a great tool that lists literally hundreds of free directories, most with don't even require a reciprocal link (a link on your site back to the directory). You canthen go down the list submitting your site to each directory. You can find this list here: http://www.directorycritic.com/free-directory-list.html » original news
